Books that explain how “stuff” works are usually written by people who are established authorities in their field of knowledge and expertise, so there’s no need for them to include supporting notes and references.

This book covers many scientific specialisms, and there is probably no one who is an authority on them all, and I’m not an authority on any of them. So, all factual statements are referenced to the writings of at least one established authority. I include many direct quotes because they explain things better than I ever could.

The full set of notes and references is a small book in itself, and is far too big to be included in the printed book.
